Silverhill Wood Walk
2 - 4 miles

From the Visitors Centre pass through the gate onto the trails, turn left under the bridge and follow the trail to the road.

Turn left at the road and cross over and you will see a gate and stile leading up a track. This was the original entrance to Teversal Colliery (locally known as 'Butcherwood') and was sunk by the Stanton Iron & Coal company in 1868. It was famous for having the shallowest shaft in Nottinghamshire and was closed in 1980.

Go through the stile and follow the track onto the site. There are several trails around the site passing by small ponds and areas planted with a variety of trees and shrubs. Some areas are open giving panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, up into the Derbyshire hills and Hardwick Hall. The summit of the site is a must to visit, as it is the highest point in Nottinghamshire at 205 metres.

To the West was Silverhill colliery which began operation in 1875 and at its peak employed over 1000 men and annually produced a million tonnes of coal. Production ceased in October 1992.
